Moving to New Web Hosting Server
A website is made up of a domain name and the web hosting server. An example of a domain name is www.asafercompany.com and it point to where the files for the website are stored or the web hosting server. Usually email is also part of the web hosting server and will have to be set up on the new server too.
There are many reasons that may require us to move the web hosting.
- The hosting server that A Safer Company users may cost you less.
- A Safer Company may not be able to access the hosting server because it is a proprietary server.
- We may need a different operating system on the server (Windows vs Unix)
Steps for Moving Web Hosting
A Safer Company has moved other clients to a new web hosting server. The process usually goes very smoothly. These are the steps that we will take to move your web hosting server.
- Set up new web hosting with new domain name. The original website is still
exactly the same.
- Design new website using new domain name. The new domain name will be used to review and test the new website. You will be given the new domain name for reviewing your new website.
- Finalize the new website and get your approval.
Set
up new email addresses on new server with new domain name. For example:
jsmith@asaferco_new.com. The existing web hosting provider should be able
to transfer the emails from the existing domain
name to the new email address.- Point original domain name to the new web hosting. We must have the URL
(web address) of the provider of the original domain name, userid and password to
make this change. Changing a domain name may take anywhere from 30 minutes
to 2 hours. This change depends on the domain name provider and how long
it takes them to update the DNS servers.
- Once the domain name is pointing to the new web hosting, we can set up
email addresses on new server using
the original domain name.
For example: jsmith@asafercompany.com
To limit the number of changes that will have to be made to Outlook or mobile phones to get the new email, the password will need to be the same. We will need to get a list of the existing passwords for each email address.
It will take about 15 minutes to set up the email addresses. - Transfer
emails from jsmith@asaferco_new.com to jsmith@asafercompany.com. This will
take about 15 minutes.
- Discontinue the old web hosting server.
